OpenRA, as the name implies, is a real-time strategy (RTS) game engine that supports Command & Conquer: Red Alert. The developers of OpenRA maintain a website with a FAQ, downloadable code and a forum where players can discuss the game.
The idea behind OpenRA was to rebalance and improve the original Command & Conquer: Red Alert. Players would get all the features of the original game, including multiplayer function, but would be able to tailor the game according to their creativity.
For instance, you can modify the game by creating snipers or add hovertanks that are able to cross rivers. Instead of being a detriment to your progress, the river becomes another piece of infrastructure you can use. You can add custom music to the game; invent weapons like radar jamming devices for your side or a multipurpose gun. Thanks to OpenRA, the Soviets don't have to be the only ones with dogs on their side.
There are, of course, some problems with OpenRA. Some gamers have problems with it crashing shortly after opening or when they attempt to host a multiplayer game. It's a work in progress and the developers encourage players to report bugs if they cannot repair them.
The website of OpenRA offers the open code, a place to report bugs, answers common questions about the game and has a forum where gamers can discuss new ideas and modifications they have made or would like to make to the game.
