XChat is an IRC (internet relay chat) client. IRC is a world wide chat systems that has existed since the 80s. Based on multiple networks of servers where each network lists it's own topics (aka channels) and even allowing you to create your own. IRC is born a long time before java and javascript web based chats - and thus has a very simple text user interface. However, keeping track of commands and other users on the channel was difficult earlier - but XChat makes it fast and easy to get started and using IRC.
On top of that XChat also support DCC - a method for transferring file between users on IRC. And for the more advanced users plug-ins can be written and implemented to perform different automated tasks. The scripts can act as bots, which look like normal users on a channel - but a actually a computer program that e.g. keeps an eye out for your friends and forward messages to them if you are offline.
