I have compared Ardour with many DAWs and recording software, including Audacity, Adobe Audition, Cubase, Reaper, etc. I hope to try Traverso and some other proprietary software soon.
Out of all of those, Ardour was not only just as fully featured for a serious musician (if not more with Laspa/Jack), it was as comfortable of an interface as Audition etc, if not more in some ways.
While this is largely opinion, those who want a tool that works well for mastering and mixing will not be disappointed by Ardour!
